John Underhill
After my working life as an engineer in the Royal Navy and at Rolls Royce I have enjoyed art in its widest sense. On an Art Foundation Course I was able to use my design and making skills to take advantage of a wide range of materials and equipment. I enjoy creating visual art forms including life drawing and over the years I have made wooden block seats for a bus shelter, signposts with oak owls on them, a large mobile in the nave of a Church using cardboard folded angels and many beach sculptures in different coastal places using local stones and pebbles. I created a portfolio in pastels for an exhibition of local views in Rolleston on Dove and sold a proportion of them for Church funds. Here in New Arley I like to look at the environment, what it is and create characteristic views which reflect the atmosphere of the area. This is an opportunity to see local reaction to my work, I would like to achieve something similar here while I continue to improve my ability in using watercolours.
